In addition to some of the proposals highlighted in ACFO’s policy recap of the 2017 budget, it has become clear that proposed changes to certain parental and caregiver benefits could have an impact on benefits in the public service FI Collective Agreement.
It’s important to note that, at this point, the changes to caregiving, maternity and parental benefits under Employment Insurance (EI) are only proposals. Therefore, employees who are currently on maternity, parental or caregiving leave in receipt of EI benefits cannot benefit from these budget initiatives at this time.
Once amendments to the Employment Insurance Act giving effect to these measures are introduced, we will carry out further analysis to determine their potential impact on federal public servants.
ACFO has reached out to Treasury Board to begin discussing the impact of these changes on the FI Community. We will continue to monitor these budget initiatives and will keep you informed of any details as they emerge.
